- Sugarless Coffee
- M. Hariharamahadevan
This is the sixth of the series on the subject. The sugarless coffee is not a drink, but a metaphor, with the message how the core values are pushed to the background retaining only the likable, favourably taken as advantageous to the moments.
This is the season of Iyyappa Devotees, for pilgrimage to Sabari Mala. The purpose behind the pilgrimage is the vairagya (firm determination) to withstand the tough conditions in the journey to the place, control of senses and the like. I was going in an auto rickshaw last week, the driver of which was said to be observing the fast for pilgrimage to Sabari Mala. The way of his behaviour and the exorbitant charges he was demanding, with his filthy language all go against the very purpose of the so called fast he was observing.
When I opened my mouth on those, he started making abusive remarks. Realising the fact that we should not fight with a pig, I stopped my talk with him. I don’t say that all the Iyyappa devotees are like that. But, even if one is doing the contrary, the name of the devotees get spoiled. Observing the fast and doing all against the very purpose, is ruining the very purpose.
All retaining the husk leaving off the grain. The sugarless coffee indeed.
