- Sugarless Coffee
- M. Hariharamahadevan
This is the third of the series on the subject. The sugarless coffee is not a drink but a metaphor, with the message how the core values are pushed to the background retaining only the likable and favourable, advantageous to the moments..
I had been to a Government office recently for getting a job done. One senior citizen aged around 70 was standing in the queue. Someone nearer to him reminded that he need not stand in the queue, pointing out to him the board above, that said - Senior Citizens need not stand in the queue. They can approach the senior officer and get things done. He gladly approached the said officer who directed him to his clerk. I was observing closely, with the thinking that I can also avail of that facility, when I would be entitled with that status in future. The clerk in his turn burst out at the senior citizen saying that his boss might tell so many things, without providing the necessary facilities. (He was talking endlessly in his cell phone after asking the 70 to wait). The poor old man was patiently waiting for his job to be finished. His job would have been finished as well, had he stood in the queue. The person who reminded of the board for the specialised services, for the senior citizen, felt sorry for the old man and left the room, cursing the system.
The senior citizen was awaiting his time from the clerk. That sugarless coffee instead of saving his time, only steals away in that office. Who wants these kind of sugarless coffee without the purpose for which it is meant for and without even the slightest involvement of the concerned and without the care and concern who has to control the situation?
That AC room leaders don’t even know what happens outside or may even pretend in not knowing anything. The sugarless coffee in this episode teaches me the hard fact to understand the harsh reality and be prepared for the state of things for the aged. It also teaches me a valuable lesson taught by Vedanta – you need not expect the worst to happen, but be prepared for it if it is to happen. It also reminds of the AC room leaders who derive much pleasure in the design of a system and boasts of it flamboyantly, but conveniently fail (or forget as well) in its implementation.
