Sugarless Coffee
M. Hariharamahadevan

This is the eighth of the series on the subject. The sugarless coffee is not a drink, but a metaphor, with the message how the core values are pushed to the background retaining only the likable, favourably taken as advantageous to the moments.

I had been for a corporate training programme recently at an MNC. The HR head was in high praise about the welfare activities of the organisation for its employees. He was specifically mentioning about the canteen facilities. He was taking me to canteen for lunch. He was boasting about the quality of foods and the utmost hygiene maintained there.

I was curiously observing their activities. To my Naughty eyes, a person serving the dishes with uniform and clean gloves so as to make everything neat and tidy, was in sight. He was wearing a shirt, whose right hand portions were very loose and were dipping at the sambar, the sambar draining from that shirt and falling along with the served sambar to the employees.

I asked him the purpose of the gloves. He said’’ for hygiene’’. I asked him what about the shirt dipping on the sambar. He simply evaded. He did not even realise the purpose or importance of the gloves. Everything was done mechanically. The purpose behind is pushed to the background.

The grain is left off, retaining the husk. A sugarless coffee indeed.
